SALARY RANGE $79,040.00- $87,360.00 (LVN) and $97,760.00-$104,000.00 (RN) Annual Salary Based on Experience


Position summary:

The Director of Staff Development (DSD) will assist with staff education and completion of mandatory in-service requirements daily for the entire health care facility including skilled nursing and assisted living. Other duties as assigned will include but may not be limited to development and maintenance of infection control surveillance and monitoring programs for skilled nursing.


Position qualifications:


  1. Licensed Nurse (RN, LVN) with minimum two years' experience in long term care
  2. Certification as Director of Staff Development for the state of California
  3. Well organized individual with strong supervisory skills
  4. Able to create and develop in-service lessons for unlicensed staff, in compliance with Department of Health Regulations
  5. Knowledgeable in infection control practices


Staff Development Responsibilities:


  • Develop and present staff education in-services with lesson plans for all mandatory state and federally required in-service topics
  • Develop and present staff education in-services with lesson plans on an as needed basis for any facility issues as they occur
  • Presentation of in-service materials during monthly all staff meeting
  • Maintain accurate record of CNA in-service hours for current and past employees in accordance with state and federal regulations
  • Organize and coordinate preparation and execution of semi-annual disaster preparation in-services and unplanned disaster drills
  • Completion of orientation packets and tour of nursing facility with newly hired or recently transferred employees
  • Monthly completion of schedule of CNA/RNA in-services (to be posted outside of DSD office no later than the 5th of the month)
  • Interview and verify/screen references for potential CNA/RNA applicants
  • New hire orientation for all healthcare center staff to include SNF/Assisted Living/Dietary, Housekeeping etc.
  • Prepare and keep current employee files for all Healthcare Center Staff


Administrative Responsibilities:


  • Monitor timecards and completion of payroll via Legiant0 system for CNAs and RNAs
  •  Monitor supply dispensary system for appropriate use and functioning.
  • Monitor e-kits for appropriate logging and removal of emergency medications by Licensed Nurses. Identify and correct discrepancies as they occur.
  • Monitor and adjust staffing in accordance with Facility census needs.
  • Maintain records of absences, late arrivals and/or other modifications to schedules for CNAs and RNAs
  • Completion of human resource paperwork to notify of any changes in employment status, leaves of absences or changes in pay rate or job title as needed.
  • Maintain up to date employee files to ensure that staff certifications (i.e., nursing license, therapy licenses/certifications, CPR, first aid), and annual physical requirements remain up to date.
  • Monthly monitoring of The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) Medicare reimbursement database to ensure no current employees are currently restricted from reimbursement programs.
  • Monthly creation and on-going maintenance of CNA/RNA staffing schedule
  • Schedule CPR renewal classes and notify all staff when they are required to attend.


Supervisory Responsibilities:


  • Monitor CNA and RNA documentation, ensuring that tasks such as ADL summaries, shower sheets, intake and output, and bowel and bladder documentation are complete.
  • Completion of general room rounds to monitor and address infection control, safety, or resident comfort concerns.
  • Completion of chart review and nursing audits as assigned.
  • Written evaluation of individual job performance for CNAs and RNAs per VHCC policy
  • Conduct staff counseling sessions as needed.
  • Ensure weekly completion of wander guard monitoring sheets, tab and bed alarm monitoring sheets and oxygen/nebulizer tubing change schedules, in accordance with company policy.
  • Assuring resident safety
  • Additional Duties assigned by Leadership. 


Quality Improvement Responsibilities:


  • Prepare and present infection control component of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) report monthly.
  • Conduct monthly safety meeting.
  • Conduct monthly RNA meeting for custodial residents.
  • Participation in weekly weight committee meeting
  • On-going survey preparation throughout the year
  • Additional Duties assigned by Leadership.
  • Coordinate survey plan of correction in-services with Administrator and Director of Nursing (DON)


Infection Control Responsibilities: 


  • Establish and maintain an infection control surveillance program for the Skilled Nursing Unit
  • Ensure correct staff utilization of PPE for both isolation and non-isolation residents.
  •  Always ensure proper handling of all contaminated materials by staff.
  • Maintain record of employee and resident seasonal influenza vaccination clinics, including consents and all appropriate assessment, documentation and follow-up, as soon as seasonal flu season begins and/or vaccine becomes available.
  • Maintain record of employee and resident annual tuberculin skin testing and chest x-ray records on an on-going basis

“This position requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods. The employee may also be required to sit occasionally to complete certain tasks. The role involves performing repetitive physical tasks such as bending and pulling. The employee must be able to speak and hear clearly and consistently to give and receive instructions. Occasional lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying of supplies or materials weighing up to 25 pounds may be required.
