The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 gender-inclusive school in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. Known for its child-centered approach and an exceptional, inspiring faculty, Dalton enrolls over 1,300 students with approximately 350 faculty and staff. Guided by the Dalton Plan, the foundation of a Dalton education, our faculty meets each student’s evolving needs, interests, and abilities. Dalton challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School and in the broader community. 

We are seeking a Director of Communications to start ASAP. This is a full-time, 12-month, in-person position and reports to the Assistant Head for Communications & Strategy (AHCS).

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a communications plan that highlights the school’s strategic initiatives, missional priorities, and The Dalton Plan.
  • Strategically plan and manage the School’s social media to engage the school community and inform prospective families. Lead monthly social media meeting that includes Admissions, Advancement, Athletics, and the PA.
  • Develop and produce major storytelling projects that highlight key programs and initiatives in conjunction with faculty and staff from other departments (i.e., José Makes a Lab podcast).
  • Provide writing, editing, and proofing support for departmental newsletters (e.g., Community Engagement & Belonging, Health & Wellness) and broad institutional communications.
  • Support other Communications staff with key deliverables like writing news stories, posting to digital signage, and updating websites.
  • Provide editorial approval for day-to-day projects in the Communications Office.
  • Track data and analytics of digital media and websites to use for planning and strategy development.
  • Other duties as assigned by AHCS.

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • 5 - 7 years of experience that includes internal/external communications, project management, and partnering across departments. 
  • Experience in an independent school Communications Office is preferred.
  • Organized, self-directed, flexible, and able to shift tasks based on changing priorities.
  • Excellent writing and experience editing and proofreading others’ work.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Photography, videography, or design skills are a plus.
